A Walk to Remember was written in the summer of 1998. Film rights were sold in December, 1998, and the novel was published in the fall of 1999. It spent nearly six months on the best-seller list in hardcover, and an additional four months on the paperback best-seller list. The film premiered in January, 2002.
The story in the novel is set in the mid 1950s. The film is set in the late 1990's.
